Tips to Protect Your Home in Freezing Temperatures
Read this blog post for a few ways to protect your Charleston area home from freezing temperatures. Busted water pipes can be a hassle and expensive to fix but in the case of this happening call NAC for a pain-free repair process!
1. Check your windows and doors for cracks or openings and seal them to prevent drafts in your home. Weather stripping is a low-cost relatively easy process and will be worth your while in the long run.
2. Open the cabinets below the sinks in your bathrooms and kitchen to allow hot air to circulate around the water pipes keeping them from freezing.
3. Let indoor faucets drip, but don’t run a heavy stream of water. The running water will help the pipes from freezing.
4. Shut your crawlspace vents when it starts to get colder outside. This will prevent any cold air flow from entering into your crawl space where the majority of your plumbing lines are located.
5. Call New Age Contractors to inspect your crawlspace for exposed plumbing lines near foundation vents. If a plumbing line is close enough to a vent, it may be a good idea to put insulation behind that vent to prevent the cold temperature from reaching the pipes and freezing them.
6. Detach your garden hose from your water spigot. Any water trapped inside the tap will freeze and swell breaking the plumbing fixture or line. It typically will split further back from the shut-off valve and will drip when you turn your valve back on in the spring.
7. Make sure your home's furnace is working correctly, because temperatures will drop quickly, and this will increase your risk of frozen pipes.
