How to Protect your Home in a Hurricane
With the danger of Hurricane Irma looming over Charleston we want to make sure you have the necessary knowledge to protect your home.
For your vehicle
Check and replace all fluids, replace the windshield wipers if possible, check your tire pressure, fill the gas tank and any alternate canisters. Remove any extraneous outer accessories, such as roof racks and have a spare tire that's in good working order. Carefully plan out the best place to park your car, hurricanes bring a lot of rainwater with them, so avoid any areas that are likely to flood. If possible, park on a hill and choose a place that offers good protection from flying rubble. If you have access to a garage, park your car in the middle. Multi-level commercial parking garages are a good option because they are very solidly constructed, but they tend to fill up quickly, so don't wait until the last minute. Use a thick waterproof tape around the edges of your windows and doors to help keep moisture out. Some people also think that making an “X” with masking tape over each window will keep them from shattering as easily.
For your house
Equip your home, make sure your yard is clear and bring all outdoor furniture, bikes, and any building materials inside that could fly off in powerful winds. Protect your windows with storm shutters or by nailing plywood over the window frames (do this with your garage door as well).Trim damaged trees and remove at-risk branches. Clean out your home’s gutters and make sure they are secure. Move any valuables from your home’s basement or low lying areas. Cover your outdoor air conditioning unit, cover it and before you leave, turn off your home’s gas, electricity, and water and unplug appliances.
Remember to call New Age Contractors to repair any damage caused by the storm!
